How Did India’s Got Latent Face a Downfall?

“India’s Got Latent” was a YouTube talent show hosted by comedian Samay Raina. It offered a space for participants across India to showcase their unique talents, judged with a comedic or roasting twist.

Unlike conventional talent shows, the format involved contestants rating themselves, and matching their score with the judges led to a win.

How Popular Was the Show?

The show gained significant traction, helping Samay Raina’s channel surpass one million subscribers. Episodes often reached 20–30 million views, trending on YouTube for extended periods. An exclusive app was even launched to host all episodes. The show’s impact was so broad that Samay was later invited to appear on Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).

Where Did It Go Wrong?

The decline began during an episode featuring Ranveer Allahbadia, Apoorva Mukhija (The Rebel Kid), Ashish Chanchalani, Jaspreet Singh, and Samay Raina. Controversies from this episode sparked outrage:

  • Inappropriate interaction between a sexist participant and judge Apoorva.
  • Ranveer posed distasteful questions during a rapid-fire segment.
  • Jaspreet made fun of a girl’s South Indian accent.

The situation escalated when Allahbadia allegedly made an offensive remark involving a contestant’s parents. This incident drew sharp criticism across social media, with celebrities and political figures weighing in. Legal complaints followed against the involved judges.

Root Cause of the Backlash

As the show grew, so did the influence of its creators. When influencers with wide reach act irresponsibly, public trust erodes quickly. In this case, that influence backfired.

Samay Raina eventually removed all episodes from his channel. In a public message, he stated:

“Everything that is happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all India’s Got Latent videos from my channel. My only idea was to make people laugh and have a good time. I’ll completely cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly.”

Takeaways

Even the most successful platforms are vulnerable to collapse if they fail to maintain responsibility, especially in the public eye. One misstep, amplified by social media, can damage credibility instantly. The key lesson here: influence must be managed with accountability.
